North Dakota Protection & Advocacy Project
Current Priorities & Resources: Agency Priorities: Voting
After the hotly disputed November 2000 Presidential election, previously obscure details of voting and vote counting became the focus of ongoing public attention and legislative action at the state and federal levels. The Help America Vote Act (HAVA, P.L. 107-252) was enacted in October 2002, and States have made many changes to election laws and procedures since. Among many other things, HAVA included a requirement that state voting systems be accessible to people with disabilities.
P&A works collaboratively with the Secretary of State’s Office, the North Dakota Association of Counties, and County election officials to ensure that North Dakota’s election system is accessible and voters with disabilities are educated on the election process and their right to vote.
