North Dakota Protection & Advocacy Project

Current Priorities & Resources: Agency Priorities: Health Care

The Citizens' Health Care Working Group released its Health Report to the American People on October 7, 2006. The report found that health care is projected to cost $11,000/person/year by the year 2011, and that we have gone from spending five cents of every dollar earned on health care in 1960 to spending fifteen cents of every dollar earned on health care today. This is a critical issue for people with disabilities who often have ongoing health care needs and difficulty accessing health care coverage.

In North Dakota, availability of adequate health care is also an issue. This may be due to the person's geographic location in a rural area or it may be due to the complexity and uniqueness of the person's disability-related health care needs. It may be necessary for a person to travel significant distances to access medical care.

P&A recognizes the challenges faced by people with disabilities and will work with eligible individuals to help them receive appropriate health care for disability-related needs. P&A also works collaboratively with other advocacy groups, people with disabilities, and other state agencies on issues related to ND's publicly-funded health care system and advocates for more comprehensive coverage of disability-related health care needs.
